Tomorrow morning, Destinations Career Academy of Wisconsin’s (DCAWI) chapter of SkillsUSA will make history at the 44th annual SkillsUSA State Conference.
During the opening ceremony, David (Pat) Akers, the chapter advisor, will receive the DCAWI charter chapter plaque, naming DCAWI the first “all virtual” chapter and the only state-wide chapter of SkillsUSA in the state of Wisconsin.
SkillsUSA is national nonprofit organization with the goal of ensuring America has a skilled workforce. As a partnership of students, teachers, and industry representatives, SkillsUSA helps students prepare for careers in trade, technical, and skilled service occupations. DCAWI is the first virtual school to offer a SkillsUSA option to Wisconsin students and it has been a very well-received program.
Since starting this past fall, more than 50 students from across the state have joined DCAWI’s SkillsUSA chapter. The chapter has made great efforts to engage students, including taking field trips to the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 139’s Training Facility in Coloma (the school’s strategic partner) and a SkillsUSA event in Chicago.
Students will attend the state conference, where they will have the chance to compete hands-on in various trade, technical, and leadership events.
“Students will also get an exciting glimpse of what’s in store for our chapter!” Pat said.
For the 2017/2018 year, Pat wants the chapter to focus on establishing chapter officers, obtaining a chapter of excellence certificate, and beginning to compete in regional competitions. With the success the chapter has already had, the future looks bright for DCAWI’s SkillsUSA chapter!
