Destinations Career Academy of Colorado (CODCA) had quite a successful week at the 2017 SkillsUSA Colorado State Leadership Conference!

It was the team’s first time ever participating in the event and they were honored to receive the Chapter of Excellence Award! The award honors a local chapter for their framework of developing personal, workplace, and technical skills.

Teammates Erin White, Victoria Abbott, and AJ Bailey competed in the job interview contest with Nicolas Enns receiving 3rd place. Joshua Lovett competed in the job skill demonstration contest and Anna White received 3rd place in the photography contest.

“I am so proud of our students!” Business teacher and CODCA SkillsUSA Chapter Advisor, Abigail Lamphere said. “We all came into this with open minds and the idea that this would be a learning experience for next year. But to have two 3rd place finishers in both the job interview and photography segments was phenomenal!  All students walked away with skills that will stick with them when entering the workforce.”

This competition also gave chapter members their first opportunity to meet in person. The students’ hard work over several months of preparation paid off.

Nicolas Enns, CODCA 10th grader, was grateful for the experience because it was different from anything he had done in the past and it introduced him to new people that have now developed into new friendships. Nicolas explained the entire competition was a team effort even though students were sometimes pitted against each other in the skill contests.

“I am very proud of how our team did in this competition,” Nicolas said. “No matter who won we were all supportive of each other. All of the well wishes I got from the students, teachers, and families from CODCA gave me the determination and confidence to place third!”

Head of School, Teri Cady said, “Kudos to our amazing students and to Abbie Lamphere who runs the program!”
