Recent Georgia Cyber Academy (GCA) graduate Aniya Louissaint is competing in taekwondo in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio! She checked in with us after the Opening Ceremonies to give her first-hand experience:
My first week of training here in Rio is complete. This week was about getting a good training regimen and taking everything in – from living with different countries in the village to eating all of the food! I’m extremely excited to be here with so many elite athletes. To be among them while preparing for the biggest fight of my life is truly inspiring. One one of my first days here, I saw (tennis stars) Serena and Venus Williams. I didn’t approach them for a picture because they seemed busy, but it was still awesome to just run into them like that!
My favorite day so far was Friday because that was the day of the Opening Ceremonies. To experience that was unbelievable. I can’t put into words the amount of joy I felt. My team looked amazing – so much so that Haiti was voted 3rd-best dressed out of 207 countries by Yahoo Style! Having the privilege to watch the fireworks and all of the performances from the center of the stadium was just breathtaking. I was in awe the whole time. And what made it all the more special for me was the fact that I was able to spend that moment with my father.
The day after the Opening Ceremonies, the Olympic Village newspaper came out and you wouldn’t believe who made the cover – it was me! I was so shocked to see my face on the newspaper. Whoever took the picture really captured how I was feeling for the entire ceremony. All I can say is that my life has been blessed with this journey and I am very grateful. I’m excited to see what next week brings!
