New K¹² iPhone App: Do You Know What Sid is Thinking About History?

A few weeks back, I did a blog post on all the cool iPhone and Android apps K¹² has released or is currently working on. Good news: as of Tuesday, we have a new app for Apple iOS devices that we’re extremely excited about adding to the list called What’s Sid Thinking: History. (It’s extra easy to see if you head over today: it’s featured in the “New and Noteworthy” Education Apps section on iTunes!)

Here are the basics:

Sid is a pretty forgetful fellow. You can help by using clues he gives to help him remember important historical people, events, or places before his brainpower runs out!

Wrath of Khan

With their tutorial videos, Khan Academy has made a big splash in the education world. Having Bill Gates singyour praises in a TED Talk is a sure way to get a lot of attention.

Over at Action-Reaction, Frank Noschese has an article Khan Academy: My Final Remarks. I agree with many of his points. Here is a quote from near the end of the post:

Khan Academy is just one tool in a teacher’s arsenal. (If it’s the only tool, that is a HUGE problem.) Khan Academy can be useful for some kids as a vehicle (build skills) to help them get to better places (solving complex problems).

On his Quantum Progress blog, John Burk also chimed in with Project Euler vs Khan Academy: The Future of Online Learning. I agree that Project Euler is really, really good, but that is a topic for another post.

A Night to Remember - Agora Cyber School Prom

The ballroom was decorated, the mood lights set, centerpieces on each table, and the smell of food penetrated allAgora Prom 2011 corners of the hall.  While guests arrived dressed in flowing gowns and matching tuxedos they lined up to have pictures taken so that they would always remember this special occasion.  Pictures were taken then groups and couples gathered around tables to enjoy a fine meal and become acquainted with people they had only ‘met’ through online classrooms or school outings.

This was the setting for the Agora Cyber School Proms held in Harrisburg and Philadelphia where sixty and almost one hundred students attended respectively.  When the students first arrived they were getting to know one another, seeing some familiar faces from outings, but largely sticking to the people they knew.  Then the DJ played the Electric Slide and a magical transformation occurred.  The dance floor was filled with colorful dresses and suits twirling and dancing all night long.

K¹² Week Summer Reading Challenge

Kristen Kinney, a K12 senior content specialist, wrote in a reading related post, “low reading scores in lower grades correlate to low performance in upper grades.” With that in mind, and being inspired by The Book Whisperer and her recent reading challenge, I went ahead and created a summer reading challenge just for K12 families.

Introducing the K12 Week Summer Reading Challenge

Here’s how it works:
