Introduction to CrossFit Kids

As mentioned in an earlier post, we are so excited to welcome the team from CrossFit Kids as regular contributers to our blog, offering health and fitness information, tips, and lesson plan suggestions,  along with overall instruction (as needed) around the basic principles of CrossFit Kids, wellness and health.

We are highlighting this information to help you learn to encourage and inspire your children to incorporate health and fitness into their every day lives and to improve their ability to learn. However, It is very important that you consult a doctor before you or your children begin any type of exercise. Always stop exercising immediately if you experience any shortness of breath, dizziness, or pain.

And now here's their very first post which will give you some background about what the CrossFit Kids program is all about...

Introducing CrossFit Kids to the K12 Community

CrossFit Kids is a method for teaching CrossFit to children and teens, ages 3-18.  CrossFit is a fitness regimen developed by Coach Greg Glassman over several decades. He was the first person in history to define fitness in a meaningful, measurable way (increased work capacity across broad time and modal domains). CrossFit itself is defined as that which optimizes fitness (constantly varied functional movements performed at relatively high intensity).

Sharing Your Success Stories

Last month, we launched ‘What’s Your Story? ’, a new way for our families to read and share their educational success stories.

We have had an overwhelming amount of submissions – from all walks of life and telling of unique situations.  Here at K12, our mission recognizes that what success looks like is unique and is based on each individual student and their story and your shared stories reflect just that.

CrossFit Kids: Improving Overall Health and Learning Capabilities

There is no denying that to help our kids grow up happy, healthy  and develop into successful adults, we need to encourage them to be physically active and incorporate fitness into their everyday lives in a fun and challenging way so they can grow up with an already established routine that incorporates healthy habits.

A quick Google search on “exercise and children’s learning” will provide you with a ton of information about the various studies done proving that regular exercise and physical activity among children will not only improve their overall health and fitness, it can also improve their learning capabilities in school, including their comprehension and test-taking skills.

With data like that available, it’s shocking that so many school systems are cutting physical education programs.

Explore Your World With Google's Field Trip Mobile App (and a Bonus Game Called Ingress)

Google Field Trip lets you discover more about the world around you. Let Google take you on a field trip today!

Discover Your World

You know, it's really a shame that throughout our daily lives we may find ourselves near some really interesting or historical spots, and never know they're right in front of us.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could be alerted when we're near something of interest, receive a bit of information about it, and choose to learn more about the world around us?

This is exactly what Google is trying to help us all accomplish with a little-known app called
"Field Trip" from Google's Niantic Labs, which is an odd offshoot of the search giant, to say the least. As odd as that might be, I appreciate Google/Niantic's attempts to get people out and explore the physical world.
