K12 Military Families on Facebook

We recognize the great sacrifices and unique challenges faced by military families every day. Many have chosen online learning as the right option for their families and we know there are other families looking for the same opportunities. In an effort to unite this large and growing community of families, we have created a ‘K12 Military Families’ Facebook page!

Parent Support and Encouragement During the Online School Year

The National Parent Network offers support, help and encouragement.

I know I have mentioned the K12 National Parent Network before, but it has so much great information for new and experienced families, it's worth mentioning over and over again.  Available to current K12 families via your OLS, this support resource offers live workshops, helpful tutorial videos, and lots of downloadable resources to review when you have that spare five or ten minutes in your day -- does spare time even exist anymore?

K12 Student Clubs Make Socialization Easy

K¹² Online Clubs

K12 online clubs One of the first questions asked by families looking into online education and K12 is; “What about socialization?”. There is no denying how important socialization is in our childrens' life.

Interacting regularly with others outside of their family circle can help kids learn that there are others in the world, and they have feelings, needs, and desires just like they do.  However, the lack of positive socialization opportunities can severely affect some children's academic performance. Students who can not relate to their peers may be shunned and are at a higher risk of developing self-esteem issues, depression, and are more likely to adopt an apathetic approach to things that do not readily interest them.  Skills like conflict resolution, understanding and forming positive social interactions, valuing other people and their ideas, taking turns, and taking responsibility for their own actions can all be honed through positive socialization opportunities.

Parent Workshop: Advice from Experienced Online Education Parents

It can be hard to try something new. No doubt about that.  But each time we step outside of our comfort zone, take action and make necessary changes, we are building up a reserve from which to pull from in times when life doesn’t go as planned. And, when does life ever go as planned?

For some families, making the choice to enroll in an online school can be daunting and a huge leap out of their comfort zone.

As part of the decision making process and to help you feel more confident,  you will obviously want to hear from other parents - how it works for them, how they get it all done, how they run their homes, and where did they learn it all. Learning from others who have been there, done that can go a long way in helping you feel comfortable, supported and most importantly, not alone.

Pinning for Education

I probably don’t need to tell you about Pinterest, the social bulletin board site that this year became the fastest growing website EVER, gaining over 10 million users in just nine months. (If you’re not familiar with the site, check out this Beginners Guide to Pinterest for a rundown.)The visual bookmarking site allows users to “pin” images from around the web to their pin boards, sharing content with the world. A simple concept, but if you’re a Pinterest user, you know just how addicting pinning can be, with gorgeous photography, beautiful (if slightly unrealistic) home ideas, covetable fashion, and mouth-watering recipes in abundance.

But Pinterest can also be a fantastic educational resource, for teachers and learning coaches, as well as students. Popular with teachers and homeschoolers, the site is a great tool for finding and sharing resources, lesson plans, and project ideas. Here you’ll find just a few ways you can use Pinterest for learning.

K12 on Pinterest: Get Support and Inspiration

When I first started living on my own, I kept a green folder where I would stash random magazine clippings, images I liked, fabrics, Ads -- anything that inspired me. The hope was one day I would be a homeowner and would pull ideas from that folder to shape the design and décor of my home.

Today's "green folder" is Pinterest.

Pinterest is a social organizing site where you create pinboards to organize and share all the cool stuff you find on the web.  You can tack up cool recipes, ideas, pictures – anything that inspires you, and you can browse other people's pinboards, getting inspiration and ideas from them as they share their likes and interests.

Why Social Media Belongs in School

If the words “social media in school” make you think of kids sneaking peeks at their Facebook news feeds, surreptitiously tweeting under the desk, or worse, cheating, you might want to think again. In honor of Social Media Week, here are 8 reasons that social media belongs in education.

  • It’s where they live. Social media is deeply embedded in our lives, and students are no exception. It’s where we get our news and it’s how we connect. 43% of high school students say that their primary means of communication with friends is through social networks.

K¹² National Speakers Series Kickoff: Stop Cyberbullying

Bully Free Zone

Written by Terri MacQuarrie, M.Ed., Manager, K12 National Community and Family Support

K12 families know the Internet is a powerful educational tool; unfortunately it can also be used to inflict serious harm. Online bullying, also known as cyberbullying, happens when a person uses the Internet, (including email, IM, and social media tools such as Facebook), cell phones, or other digital devices to send or post text or images intended to hurt, threaten or humiliate another person. According to the National Crime Prevention Council, cyberbullying affects almost half of all children and teens.  As we have seen in the news, cyberbullying is not limited to specific geographic areas – everyone who uses the internet is vulnerable.
