Transforming the Way We Learn - What does the teacher of tomorrow look like?

In a series of thinktanK12 blog posts,  we will be taking a look at some trends we can expect to see in education in the near future, as well as introducing you to some of the influential people helping revolutionize education.

As learning becomes more mobile, individualized and student-centered (as it must, in order to meet the needs of the digital native generation), and increasingly taking place in a virtual environment, the role of the teacher must also change. Boring lectures will become a thing of the past as educational trends, like virtual learning and the “flipped classroom”, gradually shift the teacher’s role from one of lecturer, to one of a coach, or guide.

Transforming the Way We Learn - Mobile Learning

On September 22nd, the New York Times will be holding the inaugural “Schools for Tomorrow” conference, bringing together preeminent leaders in education, business, politics, and philanthropy to discuss how schools can better harness technology to prepare children for life in the 21st century.

Influential thought leaders from around the world will be attending the conference, including K12 founder and CEO Ron Packard. In addition to attending, Ron will be participating in various panel discussions alongside other distinguished professionals and leaders who are helping shape and transform the way we learn.

In a series of thinktanK12 blog posts, I’ll be taking a look at some trends we can expect to see in education in the near future, as well as introducing you to some of the influential people scheduled to speak at the conference, and how they are helping revolutionize education.

While K12 students have long embraced the “learning happens everywhere” philosophy, students in traditional schools increasingly want to be able to learn anywhere and anytime. And with mobile devices becoming more affordable and powerful, they can.

Online Learning: Tips to Help Students Succeed

Here is a recent article that offers some great advice to help Online High School students get the most out of their online experience, but I think many of these tips can be applied to the online experience of most students and families, regardless of grade.

Using Social Networks: Can they help students perform better?

There is much debate about how  the overall school community should implement social networking methods to enhance learning and make it more relevant and meaningful to students.  As social media use becomes more common,  schools are growing more aware of its benefits and are looking for ways to incorporate it into their current learning experience to engage and teach today's students.

This year, the National Education Technology plan was released and one of its recommendations was to look for ways to use social networking platforms as a learning tool. The plan suggested using "the learning sciences and modern technology to create engaging, relevant, and personalized learning experiences for all learners that mirror students’ daily lives and the reality of their futures.”

Online Clubs: Get Connected, Explore Hobbies and Develop Skills

Over the next few months, Students and Learning Coaches will be given information about the many programs we offer to support, enrich and enhance their online learning experience.

Last year, we announced our online clubs program, to give students a way to connect with fellow classmates near and far, explore hobbies and have the opportunity to dive deeper into what interests them academically.  Because the response to the clubs was overwhelmingly positive, we continued into summer, and offered 42 free online summer camps. We were thrilled when more than 4000 K¹² students were able to take advantage of this program over the course of their summer.

K¹² Kids are Amazing: Hoosier Academies student Dashiell E.

15 year old diver and Hoosier Academies student Dashiell E., along with his partner, finished in first-place in the USA Diving Junior National Championships at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center. They won the inaugural boys 14-18 synchronized platform diving competition.

According to the article, "he started diving when he was 8 years old. His god-sister was a diver and invited him for his 8th birthday to stop by where she dove and try it. He did, and he has hardly stopped since."

Online Connections: Oxygen, Water and one more thing…

For a moment, consider me your flight attendant.

“In an emergency, an oxygen mask will pop down in front of you. If you’re travelling with a child, secure your own mask first, before assisting those around you.”

Every Learning Coach needs to take this advice. You can’t help your students if you don’t take care of yourself first, right? But how?

K12 isn’t shipping you any oxygen masks, so there is no need to dig into those boxes to see what you missed. (And don’t worry; UPS won’t be pulling up with MORE boxes!)

Rebecca Black is One of Many Bullied out of School

Yesterday I read about Youtube video star Rebecca Black being taken out of school by her parents because of constant harrassment and bullying and homeschooled to allow her to focus on her studies.

We have many K¹² families who have chosen online education due to bullying. It's alarming that across the country, bullying reports have been increasing in high schools and recent studies show that "bully-ridden schools have lower test scores". With reports like these, it's clearly a serious issue that all parents and schools need to be aware of and address.

Have you found bullying to be an issue at your schools?

Online Learning: Learning Doesn't Stop Over the Summer

Summer ClubsDid you know that we recently offered free online summer camps to K¹² families? Our students enjoyed learning about  science, technology, writing, magic, dinosaurs, babysitting, and water safety to name a few, as well as the company of students from places far and near -- Germany to Georgia -- Alaska to Arizona --Hawaii to Massachusetts!

Over 4000 K¹² students attended one or more of the 42 summer camps offered and we are proud to announce that we did not receive any reports of scrapes, bruises or mosquito bites!

Online Education: Embracing Technology to Prepare Children for the Future

I read an interesting article entitled Social media find place in classroom in USA Today yesterday about social media use in education today. It really highlights a shift that is currently taking place in education and the need for all of us to consider how we can and should use technology to ensure our system of learning is engaging young minds and preparing them for the future.
