8 Tips for Taking Better Pictures with Your Phone

The mobile photography explosion has revolutionized the way we capture the important (and not so important) events in our lives. Smartphone owners (and a great many “dumb phone” users too) now carry cameras with them everywhere they go, cameras with the ability to share photos with the world in an instant.

As a result, people today take many more pictures than we used to. We take photos of ourselves, our kids, and the big and small events in our day, right down to what we ate for lunch.

While camera phone technology is continually improving, these devices do have their limitations. Still, the best camera is the one you have with you. An iPhone is better than a Canon DSLR when the Canon is at home in a bag!

Explore Your World With Google's Field Trip Mobile App (and a Bonus Game Called Ingress)

Google Field Trip lets you discover more about the world around you. Let Google take you on a field trip today!

Discover Your World

You know, it's really a shame that throughout our daily lives we may find ourselves near some really interesting or historical spots, and never know they're right in front of us.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could be alerted when we're near something of interest, receive a bit of information about it, and choose to learn more about the world around us?

This is exactly what Google is trying to help us all accomplish with a little-known app called
"Field Trip" from Google's Niantic Labs, which is an odd offshoot of the search giant, to say the least. As odd as that might be, I appreciate Google/Niantic's attempts to get people out and explore the physical world.

Technology: Then and Now

I am constantly in awe about how technologically saavy my kids are. It's commonplace for them to just pick up a smart phone, tablet, computer, or whatever else fits in that category and begin doing whatever it is that they need to do - seemlessly as if they have been doing it their entire life.  The reality is they have been doing it for most of their lives. There is a night and day difference between what is available to my kiddos today and what I had growing up.

K12 Phoneme Videos: Now available for iPhone and iPad!C-A-T. Sound it out. What does it spell?

Many of you may remember being taught similar exercises when learning to read, breaking down each part of the word until you could comfortably combine the sounds into a recognizable word. The smallest unit of sound, typically represented by a single letter or two letters together, is a phoneme. Phoneme fluency and knowledge is foundational to reading fluency and language mastery.

Alert: Germs Invading Mobile Devices! Get xGerms: Counting for iPhone, iPad and Android

Updated August 7, 2012: xGerms Math is now available through iTunes, Google Play and the Amazon App Store!

K12 ’s newest mobile app launches today: xGerms Counting. In this game, big germs with icky names like Blurgle, Fibble, Olly, and Meech are needed for research—but they are protected by a crowd of smaller germ henchmen! It’s up to kids to count the smaller germs correctly (by 1s, 2s, 5s, or 10s) and then tap the big germ to make the capture. xGerms Counting is based on the xGerms math games, which are available to families enrolled in K12 CALMS courses.

The 16 games in xGerms Counting increase in difficulty as kids master each one. Kids will enjoy hearing goopy sounds when they tap little germs and the “Bow-wow-wow!” of a big germ that’s in danger of capture. There’s lots positive reinforcement for counting and capturing germs so kids that are hesitant to count to higher numbers will want to keep going. If they get stuck, useful hints will help them get back on track.
