The Parent Teacher Connection

Can You Taste The Difference?

Making Cookies

While studying Elementary Education I was told by professors about how important it is to enlist the parents in the education process.  In my experience working in different school districts and in the online environment,  I have seen that active and involved parents will greatly improve student academic success, appropriate behavior, self-esteem and college enrollment.

If it is so obvious that parent involvement is a key to student success why are schools not capitalizing on this great resource?  Since the time I have been working in the online environment,  I have seen many wonderful success stories of students and without fail,  I have been speaking with and developing a strong relationship with parents.

How to Inspire Your Kids to Give Back this Holiday Season

Lists of presents filling the page front to back, hundreds of dollars spent on gifts, a warm holiday dinner, presents too plentiful to fit under the tree – these are occurrences that the average American family may be accustomed to during the holiday season.  In the midst of it all, we often forget about the millions of families to which these blessings are not guaranteed. How can we teach our kids about the importance and relevance of giving back and the countless ways to do so this holiday season?

The Importance of Giving Back

  1. Explain to your children that not every family has the luxury of purchasing and receiving gifts or having a warm meal during the holiday season. A great way to convey the importance of holiday giving to younger kids is with books such as The Berenstain Bears and the Joy of Giving by Jan and Michael Berenstain, and Angel Pig and the Hidden Christmas by Jan Waldron and David McPhail.

Dispelling the Top 5 Myths about Online Education

Myth: Kids just stare at a computer screen all day.

Fact: In the K-8 program, only about 30% of lessons are online. Traditional materials are used the remainder of the time; things like textbooks and novels, art supplies, musical instruments, CDs, and science equipment.

In high school, the percentage of online work is higher. This shift to more online coursework gives students more interaction with teachers who are experts in their subject areas. It also sets the stage for college (whether brick & mortar or online), where many classes are moving all or partially online, and even offline classes typically include online work. We live in a connected, online world. In many industries, business is largely conducted online, and more are moving that way. The skills necessary to work and communicate in an online environment are important, and it doesn’t hurt to begin to develop them early.

Education Options for our Children

Standing Up For Your Children

In this posting I’m going to start out by bragging a little about the strides my son, Matthew, has been making this school year. Matthew is four years old and suffers from Autism and Apraxia of Speech. Now, for the first time, we are starting to be able to know what he knows through sign language.

For the past two years my wife, MaryBeth, and I have known that Matthew was struggling and it was sometimes a fight to convince doctors and educators that something needed to be done to help him.  In January of this past year MaryBeth purchased some sign language DVD’s and Matthew took to signing.  Our other children have done some signing as babies but nothing like what we are now doing.  Since January Matthew has shown his personality, talents and intelligence in miraculous ways.

Announcing the 2012-2013 K12 Art Competition

It's time for the 2012–2013 K¹² Art Competition

Did you know that according to Edutopia.org, "years of research have shown that arts education is closely linked to almost everything that we as a nation say we want for our children and demand from our schools: academic achievement, social and emotional development, civic engagement, and equitable opportunity. Involvement in the arts is associated with gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking, and verbal skill. Arts learning can also improve motivation, concentration, confidence, and teamwork."?

Giving students a fun way to explore their creative side and an opportunity to be recognized for their talents is the goal of our annual Art Competition, a K12 program created to encourage creativity through the arts.

Tips for Facilitating Friendships for Kids

“But what about socialization?”

You’ve probably heard this question, perhaps you’ve even asked it yourself. It is one of the most frequently asked questions I hear about online schools. Parents of home and online schooled students are quick to point out that all socialization does not happen in a classroom between the hours of 8 and 3. Furthermore, the socialization that does take place is not all positive.

Still, when you bring your child home for school, it is important to include a social element in your schooling plan and to make sure that you are facilitating opportunities for interaction and friendship with other kids. If you have previously relied on school to provide social interaction for your kids, or if you’re just looking for ideas for new ways to encourage it, here are some things to keep in mind.

Punctuation: Does it Matter?

Guest blogger: Michael Solow, Senior Director of Creative, contributes to the thinktanK12 blog in celebration of National Puncutation Day!

Happy National Punctuation Day!

National Punctuation Day

In this age of the punctuation-challenged text message, tweet, and email, one wonders whether the craft of punctuation will, at some point, die out forever.

Granted, there are times when a hurried text without a comma, period, or missing capitalization will do the trick.  (And yes, I have been guilty of the above, though I don’t like to admit it among fellow English majors.)
