Meet an Online Teacher: Kelly Edginton

At K12, we appreciate all that our teachers do and recognize the enormous impact they have on students and families. We’re happy to continue our new series of blog posts to introduce thinktanK12 readers to some of our amazing and experienced teachers around the country.

In this month’s installment of Meet an Online Teacher, I’m pleased to introduce our readers to Kelly Edginton! Kelly is a former teacher, and now works as the Interim Head of School at K12 partner school, Idaho Virtual Academy. Kelly was one of the very first teachers at IDVA when it began in 2002, and she later served as principal of both IDVA’s high school and elementary school before moving into her current role.

Meet Matt Arkin, Head of School at Georgia Cyber Academy

‘Meet the K¹² Community’ is a regular blog series featuring students, learning coaches, teachers, curriculum specialists and anyone else who plays a role in making online education a reality for children worldwide.

Matt Arkin certainly made a nice living as a business consultant before deciding to work in public education. But he didn’t have the opportunity to change lives the way he does today.

Introduction to CrossFit Kids

As mentioned in an earlier post, we are so excited to welcome the team from CrossFit Kids as regular contributers to our blog, offering health and fitness information, tips, and lesson plan suggestions,  along with overall instruction (as needed) around the basic principles of CrossFit Kids, wellness and health.

We are highlighting this information to help you learn to encourage and inspire your children to incorporate health and fitness into their every day lives and to improve their ability to learn. However, It is very important that you consult a doctor before you or your children begin any type of exercise. Always stop exercising immediately if you experience any shortness of breath, dizziness, or pain.

And now here's their very first post which will give you some background about what the CrossFit Kids program is all about...

Introducing CrossFit Kids to the K12 Community

CrossFit Kids is a method for teaching CrossFit to children and teens, ages 3-18.  CrossFit is a fitness regimen developed by Coach Greg Glassman over several decades. He was the first person in history to define fitness in a meaningful, measurable way (increased work capacity across broad time and modal domains). CrossFit itself is defined as that which optimizes fitness (constantly varied functional movements performed at relatively high intensity).

K12 Military Families on Facebook

We recognize the great sacrifices and unique challenges faced by military families every day. Many have chosen online learning as the right option for their families and we know there are other families looking for the same opportunities. In an effort to unite this large and growing community of families, we have created a ‘K12 Military Families’ Facebook page!

Parent Support and Encouragement During the Online School Year

The National Parent Network offers support, help and encouragement.

I know I have mentioned the K12 National Parent Network before, but it has so much great information for new and experienced families, it's worth mentioning over and over again.  Available to current K12 families via your OLS, this support resource offers live workshops, helpful tutorial videos, and lots of downloadable resources to review when you have that spare five or ten minutes in your day -- does spare time even exist anymore?

June 8th is World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day is a day to learn about ocean conservation and how the future of ocean conservation is in the hands of young people around the world.  This year, each participating zoo or aquarium will host family events with a  1, 2, 3 and the Seas theme, with the goal of encouraging children of all ages to creatively examine how numbers and counting play an important role in protecting our oceans.

As a proud partner of the AZA, K12's Rhythm of Conservation program is helping elevate the awareness of conservation efforts through positive, optimistic messages and information to inspire families to become personally involved in making a difference.

Congratulations to the K12 Distinguished Leadership in Education Award Winner

Earlier this month, we held our K12 Distinguished Leadership in Education Awards Ceremony to honor and celebrate the finalists and national winner of the K12 Distinguished Leadership Award in honor of Lori Funk.

Lori was the founding Academic Administrator for Georgia Cyber Academy and oversaw all curriculum and instruction at GCA.  She had a real passion for helping students and teachers achieve their potential. Thanks to her leadership and contributions, the school has grown to be one of the largest and most successful online schools in the country.

Sadly, a sudden and rare illness claimed Lori's life on August 27, 2010.

Her passing touched many throughout the K12 community. As a way to honor and celebrate her many contributions, the K12 Distinguished Leadership Award in honor of Lori Funk was created.

Meet the K¹² Community: Ben Scandlen, K¹² Vice President of Digital Marketing

My name is Ben Scandlen and I am the new Vice President of Digital Marketing here at K¹².  Having three little ones under five years old and wanting the best for them, I am inspired to work for a company whose vision is changing education.   I don’t know how much I will actually be blogging, but I did want to take a few minutes to introduce myself and pass on a few “new guy” observations while I am still in the new guy phase.

First, I wanted to let you know how impressed I am with the employees I have met here at K¹².  They are intelligent and very competent, but most importantly they are really driven by the desire to see the students achieve their best.  It is true up and down the company and it is amazing to see such spirit.

Announcing the 2011-2012 K12 Outstanding Family and Support Award Recipients

In all K12 partner schools, teachers play an integral role, even though that role is mostly “virtual.” K12 teachers are certified, highly qualified, and widely experienced. The majority of these dedicated educators have advanced degrees, coupled with many years of classroom experience.

But the one thing they all have in common is a forward-thinking perspective—and a passion for helping students succeed.  Our teachers are subject matter heroes!

Last month, our Academic Services Group held a special award ceremony to honor and recognize a group of inspiring heroes, who continually demonstrate exceptional leadership skills and their deep passion for helping students and their families succeed.
