Plugging Up Time Leaks

One of the most powerful characteristics of online learning is…well…the Internet!  It’s always on and always there.  One of the things new online learners struggle with the most, however, is the very same thing…the Internet!  I’ve referred to it in a past post as the Great Distraction.  Yes, we build really great lessons…but let’s be honest here—there are a lot of other fun things students can do with their time that competes with their learning.

K¹² on foursquare: Learning happens everywhere

Today I am super excited to share one of the projects I’ve been working on at K12 this summer. We’ve brought our message -- learning happens everywhere -- to foursquare! You can now follow K12 on foursquare and check out our fun, educational tips at kid and family-friendly locations all over the country!

If you’re not already familiar with it, foursquare is a social networking tool that allows you to share your activities with your friends on foursquare, facebook, and Twitter. It’s a free app for smart phones (there’s also a mobile site for other phones) that allows you to “check in” at the places you visit – everywhere from restaurants and parks, to museums and stores. Many businesses also offer specials for foursquare users who “check in” and you can earn points, badges and “mayorships” from Foursquare by checking in to lots of different places.
